Over 4 million cases of Community Acquired Pneumonia are seen in the US every year. Statistics indicate that more than 600000 of these are hospitalized and this accounts for approximately $4 Billion in cost related to hospitalization. While hospitalization varies regionally, most physicians rely on subjective information provided by the patient and tend to overestimate the risk of death associated with pneumonia. Sometimes patients that are admitted are inappropriately left on the General Medical Floor instead of being transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. This suggests that there is no consistent standard for approaching patients with pneumonia.
